So I just upgraded from a 256 meg memory, 20 gigabyte hard drive Dell PC laptop to a 2 gig memory, 120 gigabyte hard drive macbook, and I'm missing windows.
The whole quote about macs is that they "just work" No they don't, and that's the fucking problem!
One. For some reason, whenever I reboot, USB drivers I've installed get messed up. So I have to reinstall my tablet and my printer whenever I want to use them, pretty much. Two - all these features that are designed to make macs "easy" (aka "for retards") are just grinding. Like, Spaces? I keep waiting until I get used to it, but every time my dashboard pops up or my programs disappear from the screen when I try to access something on the toolbar or the dock, I die inside. The dock, too, is a pain in the ass - I am always supposed to hold the icon down a little longer than I actually do, so moving icons around is a pain - they keep deleting themselves so I have to open up applications to find them again. Three - need to close a program? Just click the red X, right? Wrong! After you close the open window by clicking the red X, the program stays open - you have to do command + Q too. Four - right-click? no, we're too cool for that. This would be bearable if the subsitute button - control, option, or command, didn't change with basically each folder/program you're in. Five - the keyboard keys are just a little too hard to push in, forcing me to choose between hand cramps and typo-ridden prose.
Today, I was trying to print a picture. On my PC, I could have done the needed task in about 20 seconds. Just open up the easy picture wizard (whatever it's called). However, on a mac, they decided to make it annoying in a way that is usually attributed to PCs. I tried to print it from Firefox, so I went to file --> print, you know, standard way, but no matter how much I tried to get the picture to scale to a quarter of the size of the page, it wouldn't. So I saved it onto my computer, and finally I could, but now it wouldn't print, because of aforementioned USB problem!
Many of the ways the mac is "easy" just seem like they were smoothened over and hid, so when I want to actually tweak an advanced preference (because I am actually smart enough to use windows without bitching about its complexity), it's annoying just to dig it up.
Basically I would allow myself to accept these things, if not for macwhores who kept proclaiming the system's superiority and lack of bugs. And also if they would stop acting like the macs made them cooler, because honestly, John Hodgman is fucking awesome.
